Canyon of the Eagles Brings You Nature, Music & The Stars

NATURE

Ninety percent of all monarch butterflies migrate through Texas from September to November, peaking in mid-October, and Canyon of the Eagles is on their migration pathway. They have a complex migration system transmitted entirely through instinct across multiple generations.

They are the only butterfly to make a two-way migration (like birds), they have the longest migration of any insect (approximately 3,000 miles), and yet they only weigh around 0.035 ounces (that’s less than a  stick of gum). Imagine doing this without the use of GPS or the internet!

Walk our Bird & Butterfly Trail this fall while they pass through. Look for them on native milkweed plants which are essential to the monarchs’ ability to develop larva. Check out the monarch butterfly page on our website for more information.

Canyon of the Eagles gets its’ name from the American Bald Eagle who nests in the area now through the spring.  You can spot the eagles while on the trails, lakeside where they fish, and from a boat on Lake Buchanan where many nest and fish along the cliffs. For optimum viewing, reserve a kayak or book a two-hour canyon cruise with Vanishing Texas River Cruises located one mile from the resort.

Two programs offered exclusively for overnight guests, Shake, Rattle & Coil on Saturdays and Guided Nature Walks on Sundays, are fascinating ways to learn about nature. Neither program requires reservations and both programs are included in your stay. They are both great family activities and offer plenty of room for social distancing while participating.

MUSIC

Check out the entire lineup of performers at Canyon of the Eagles on Saturday nights. Why not combine the outdoor fun of hiking, kayaking, and birdwatching with entertainment?  We are pleased to highlight these three performers who are booked to sing at the resort for the first time. Enjoy dinner in Overlook Restaurant with stunning views of Lake Buchanan and the countryside before the concert or order your meal to-go and eat outside during the concert. The Eagles Nest Lounge will be open for drinks and food before and during the concert.

October 23 and November 6

Pauline Reese, CMA Texas Female Vocalist of the Year, two-time Entertainer of the Year, and two-time Female Vocalist by Texas Music Association, will delight all who hear her at two acoustic guitar concerts held outdoors. Also, don’t forget to ask her about her new duet coming out with Willie soon.

October 30

Guestroom reservations are already picking up since we announced Felix Truvere is performing for one night only. He sells out the biggest clubs in Texas with his full band but will treat us to a solo acoustic performance like none other. He is a fantastic entertainer.

November 13 and December 11

Beautiful songbird, Natalie Rose, will perform two holiday concerts blending Christmas and country music. What a great chance to get in the spirit of the holiday season! We can’t wait for her debut performance on the patio.

STARS

EAGLE EYE OBSERVATORY

One of our most popular nature-based programs is a one-hour astronomy experience held onsite at the Eagle Eye Observatory and led by our resident astronomer, Jim Sheets. He has a knack for helping everyone, from novices to experts, better understand the outer limits of our universe. The retractable roof and telescopes combined with the dark sky location make for spectacular views of the stars and planets. Reserve your observatory experience through Guest Services upon arrival. Also, read Jim’s monthly column, Astronomically Speaking, on our website.

SMORES FIREPIT

As the fall weather cools, the evening becomes ideal for gathering under the stars around the firepit located off the patio. Tell stories, sip a glass of something cold or warm, roast a marshmallow, and relax.
